Hungary builds SECOND wall as PM warns thousands may come if Turkey migrant deal collapses

HUNGARY plans to build a SECOND fence along its southern border to keep out "hundreds of thousands" of migrants who could swamp the country if Turkey's fraught migrant deal with the European Union collapses.Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the new fence, built alongside an existing one, would be stronger and more permanent and able to hold back a massive influx of people.

Building a more substantial barrier along the frontier with Serbia would be necessary if the agreement between Turkey and Brussels to clamp down on migration into Europe via the Balkans continues to unravel, the right-wing leader said.

Mr Orban threatened to stop migrants "by force" if he had to as he announced plans to deploy an extra 3,000 police officers to the border.More than a million people crossed Europe last year - many passing through Hungary, which recorded the highest number of refugee arrivals per capita.
Hungary had 1,799 asylum applications per 100,000 of the local population in 2015, compared with 587 in Germany and 60 in the UK.
That flow has since been reduced to no more than a steady trickle but fears are growing that Turkey could be about to scupper the EU deal.More than a million people crossed Europe last year - many passing through Hungary, which recorded the highest number of refugee arrivals per capita.
